Welcome back...term 4 here we come!

Kaya,

Welcome back to our final term together! I hope you and your children have managed to have a fun and restful break. I switched off in week one and headed off to Jurien Bay with the extended family. My highlight being the sandboarding at Sandy Cape...however sitting on the sandboard was all I was allowed to do. I am truly grateful for it now, as I feel refreshed and ready for a busy final term.

As I think about how quickly this year has gone and how close we are to the end I can't help but reflect on how much the students have grown and matured. I am looking forward to an important term together, working hard to prepare them as best as I can for the transition into high school next year.

CONGRATULATIONS GOES TO...

STAR CITIZEN AWARD
Congratulations to Zayne on receiving our final star citizen award for 'Respect' last term. He received his award for developing a mature and responsible approach toward himself, his learning and those around him. Within the classroom he is one of the first to show RESPECT by actively listening, focusing on the task at hand and showing gratitude for the preparation that has taken place to enhance his learning. Outside of the classroom, I love seeing him around his friends and those in younger years, as he values and cherishes each relationship and interaction he shares in. He is an active leader in our school who demonstrates not only ’Respect’ but our three other core values. We are so lucky to have him leading the way!

🖌🎨 PEACE POSTER WINNER 🖌🎨
Well done to Prada Piaggi for her outstanding peace poster submission. Prada was voted the winner of OLC by the teachers and Year 4 and 5 students. Prada your work was beautiful. A massive shout out to all the year 6 students who worked very hard on their Peace Poster. All the teachers said that this year's entries were the best they've seen over the years.

Last term Lexi, Sully and Mahley wrote a blog about their learning for the final weeks but we didn't get to share it so over to them for the incredible learning that took place in the final two weeks...

Over to them...

TERM 4 WEEK 9&10 LEARNING:
Ellensbrook Excursion:
God blessed us with fantastic weather on our excursion to Ellensbrook house in Margaret River. We learned about the interwoven history at Ellensbrook including the early settlement history and the Wadandi history. We learned that the Aboriginal name for Ellensbrook is Mokidup and just a small walk from the homestead will take you to Meekadarribee, the bathing place of the moon. It is very bad luck to gaze upon the moon "Meeka" as it bathes here. We also got to explore the homestead with the wonderful tour guide Skye.

We were very fortunate to have the most wonderful parent helpers on the day. They helped us with the organisation and running of three the rotations including, walking tour guide extraordinaire, a beautiful charcoal painting session with two pros and an exciting and challenging historical/culture scavenger hunt with two ultimate mums. Thank you so much for joining us on the day and making it very special for all the students.

2040 Movie Viewing:
Thank you to those parents and students that joined us for the 2040 movie viewing in the hall, it was great to see our students relax with their folks. Thank you to Tara, Holly Greening, Joe and Jasper for your excellent speeches at the start of the movie. We raised $100 for the Numbat Association for their protection and rehabilitation, well done Year 6 students!

Book Week:
Book week was so much fun, the students looked wonderful.

We loved the opportunity to go through all the other classes in the school to see how hard they had worked on their book week artwork. We even got to take part in some of the projects.

Math:
We are learning about linear and function sequences; identifying how to find and apply rules and patterns. A linear pattern is a pattern that increases or decreases by the same number or rule. It is used to find the next number of sequence by applying the rule to the number before it. Where as a function sequence is one where you need to apply a rule to the position of the number of a sequence to find the answer (output). This week we are learning about ways to find and write the rules of function sequences. Tricky stuff!

Writing:
Our Book Week book was Bindi and we did some predictions of what the book will be about it.

We have read halfway, and it is already amazing. The book is about a girl called Bindi, she is 11 years old, and a weird fact is she eats rock melon with dinner. She plays hockey and her mum is the coach of her team. She has two horses called Nelly and Scoot and 2 dogs named Rocky and Taz. There is a lot more information about her and your kids can tell you about the book.

As part of our Book week we have to display something about the book for other classes to come around and view. We created a character description of Bindi, with an image depicting what we thinks she looks like and the things that make her who she is. See our examples below, they are also on display in the class for you to see:

Elderly Letters:

A new initiative in the school is connecting with our community, and as part of this each class have been assigned elderly pen pals from Cape Care to write to and stay in contact with. Our include Gwen, Bryan, Evelyn and Franc. After our first round of letters we have heard back from Gwen and Bryan who have shared a little more about them and generously answering we had.

So in the second last week of school, we wrote our second round of letters to our elderly pen pals. This time we also decided to craft up some gifts to send with our letters. We write about the holidays that are coming up, and the sport we play. We make gifts so they can admire them and play the games and toys we have put effort into making. It is so nice that the elderly people always write to us and listen to what we have to say.

TERM 4 WEEK 1 INFORMATION:

NOVEL STUDY - 'ONCE' by Morris Gleitzman
In English this term we are starting with a whole class novel study on the book 'Once' by Morris Gleitzman. For those unfamiliar to this text, it is a children’s historical fiction novel. Set in Poland during World War II, the story follows Felix, a 10-year-old Jewish boy being hidden from the Nazis in a Catholic orphanage, as he embarks on a quest to find his parents. Gleitzman was inspired by the true experiences of the Polish-Jewish educator and author Janusz Korczak during the Holocaust. Korczak is the inspiration for the character Barney, who sacrifices himself to try to ensure the well-being of Jewish orphans. Once is the first title in his seven-book series that follows Felix through World War II into old age.

I am aware a few students have already read this book, however they will develop a deeper understanding of WWII and the holocaust as I will be providing support through numerous writing sessions that will give them the background information they required to really understand the novel.

After this the students will then participate in a novel study on a teacher-selected book, which will be read at school as well as sent home for homework reading. Please keep an eye for these novels starting week 3.

SEESAW
Seesaw has been a brilliant reporting tool for us as teachers and we love seeing your comments on all your children’s work. We are looking forward to continuing this great reporting method this term along with your child’s end of semester report which will include grades and a general comment. We can’t wait to share more of our amazing work with you before the end of Term Four, so keep an eye out for our amazing work to come!😍

GRADUATION POWERPOINT
I am are hoping that you can find and email me a photo of your child as a baby and/or toddler. We would like to create a PowerPoint for Graduation with these special photos, as well as others from their time at OLC. If you have any ripper photos from your child's time at OLC, we would greatly appreciate any donations. Please email them through so I can get onto this job as soon as I can.

STATIONARY
If you can please take a moment to remind your child to clean out their pencil cases and check if they are missing anything. Even today I noticed that students were still walking around for glue, erasers and coloured pencils.

Students having what they need goes a long way to helping them feel organised and in control.

LAPTOPS
Please also remind your child to put their laptop on charge ready for each day, as work that is not complete in class because of a flat laptop will be sent home for ADDITIONAL homework.

SUMMER UNIFORM
Not that it feels like it but we are back in summer uniform. There is a two week swap over period so long pants are still welcome as the weather is still cool! Don't forget summer dresses with white socks for girls.

HATS
Please make sure that your child has a hat that stays in their school bag - this was a major issue towards the end of last term and just creates stress for them as they aren't able to go down to the oval, basketball courts or nature playground areas.
