Review of Weeks 6&7 by Justin, Cooper, Kirra & Austin!!

Kaya,

Happy Father's Day to all of our wonderful Father's...we hope you have been showered with lots of love, kindness and special treats throughout the day. Here's hoping that BBQ glaze comes in handy...hopefully a sticky rib or two is enjoyed with that one!

happy fathers day

This week's blog is brought to you by Justin, Cooper, Kirra & Austin: a larger crew than usual because we missed week 6.

Over to them...

Finally spring is here, however this week was very wet and cold which didn't quite match the season change. With week 6 being a short week, the time is flying by leaving us with little time to finish off the many projects we have on the go!

Fun fact: Did you know that Justin does minor stand-up comedy at school to entertain others and his friends.

CONGRATULATIONS GOES TO...

MERIT AWARD WINNERS
Congratulations to Joe and Lolah on receiving the merits awards for 6R this week. Joe was rewarded for his consistent hard work and participation in all classroom tasks. He demonstrates a wealth of knowledge on a regular basis. Lolah received her award for displaying her wonderful values of Appreciation and Respect. She has impeccable manners, always sharing a bright good morning and sincere farewell each and every day. She is the first help out and the one to always notice when someone is in need. So lucky to have these little champions in our class.

ATHLETICS CARNIVAL WINNERS
The Athletics Carnival was a great day for all, but most importantly Leeuwin who took home the win. A further congrats goes to Zayne and Mahley our boy champions and Kirra and Mahley our girl champions. It was a great day had by all with pretty decent weather...until that random wind gust took away our tents!

WEEK 6 LEARNING HIGHLIGHTS

MATHS
A highlight of this week and one of the ways to sum up our Probability unit was for us to recreate a card/board game that promotes the learning we have gained over the past couple of weeks. We had the chance to play these games with our parents at the Parent Open Evening...some proved to be quite challenging stumping our parents with our probability questions. Below is an example of one of the games created:

This one is a hybrid of the game snakes 'n' ladders. Apart of the requirements were that you had to include a catchy title, instructions of how to play, an easy to follow format, appealing presentation, variations to the game to make it easier and more challenging and it had to relate to or teach probability in some way.

This week we also started a Probability Investigation, as our final assessment of this topic. The mission of the investigation was to find the most commonly used letter within the English language. We as a class made the prediction that 'A, R, E, S, T' are the most commonly used letters in the alphabet and the ones we would use if we were playing hangman or scrabble. The investigation was completed in week 7, and we found out that we predicted 3 out the 5 correct. 'A, E, I, O, T' have been found through research to be the most frequent letters used throughout different forms of writing. You will see the results of our investigation on Seesaw very soon👏

WEEK 7 LEARNING HIGHLIGHTS

HEALTH
This week a main focus was placed on our Health Campaign Posters and Persuasive Letters. We had to select an area of focus within the school that requires attention e.g. eating more fruit and vegetables, drinking more water, wearing our hats, picking up rubbish, etc. We then had to design a campaign that enforces what we want to see happen more around the school. We were shown a variety of persuasive advertising posters where the key features were pointed out. When designing ours we had to think about our campaign name, slogan, fact/statistic and a call to action, as well as, the images, fonts and colours. These are now completed and ready to be printed to put up around the school.

ENGLISH
We are currently working on our draft persuasive letters to support our Health campaign. Mrs Ricciardone is really impressed with our knowledge and use of the PEEL structure within our body (argument) paragraphs. We have to state the point (argument), explain and elaborate on the argument in more detail, provide examples through facts, statistics or research and then link this paragraph to the next paragraph. It is quite tricky to think of all of this, as well as remember to add other things like modality, emotive language, alliteration, rhetorical questions, rule of three, hyperbole...the list goes on!!

You will be able to see these up and around the school soon too.

DESIGN & TECHNOLOGY
So the jars you may have seen in earlier posts with our calico bags brewing away with our natural tie-dye ingredients, have finally been opened. It was a tough and smelly experience opening them to see how our bags had turned out...some were much the same as when they had started yet others showed some incredible results. See our two favourites below:

Now onto more digging, building and planting to create our very own OLC Aboriginal Outdoor Classroom and Garden. On Thursday we are lucky to be having Bunnings come out and help us build some garden beds, so we can begin planting our bush tucker in later weeks.

CALENDAR ART
The yearly calendar art designs are in production. This year we are focusing on creating a beautiful representation of the Wadandi Six Seasons. We were shown a few ideas that have been done online and reviewed the flora, fauna, weather and colours of each season. From here we have been able to decide on a design and draft out what elements we are going to use for each season. Here is a draft to show you just one design:

INSPIRATION DESIGNS SHOWN:

Art Gallery of Western Australia - Six Seasons - The Concert | Facebook          Celebrate The Noongar Six Seasons At Fremantle Markets With Our Art Trail Display And More | Fremantle MarketsNoongar six season mural - My Art Room Life     SIX SEASONS – sunsetcoast life

To finish them off we are going to use outliners and water colours, experimenting with shading to produce a bright and bold piece that will scan well and produce a beautiful keepsake or Christmas gift for you to purchase.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION

OLC'S Got Talent Finals
Well done to the 16 acts that were selected for the OLC's Got Talent finals this Friday 10th September. Mrs Haines was so impressed with all the talent that auditioned last Tuesday, so a big shout to everyone who had the courage to get up there and perform. The final this Friday will begin at 1.45pm in the hall if you would like to attend. As a result, there will be no assembly this week.

School Photos
nice snapThis Thursday 9th of September our school photos will be taking place. Family photos can be taken before school from 8am on this day.

We will also be having our Graduation photo on Friday 10th September. Can you please ensure your child is wearing their sports uniform with the correct white socks and Leaver's t-shirt (no faction t-shirts please!) There will also be a muck up photo at this time where the students can bring a small prop  (sunglasses, hat, wig, etc) to wear in this photo.

Operation Christmas Child Donations
During the week your child brought home a note regarding 'Operation Christmas Child' and the requirements for this. Thankyou to those who have already brought in their donation and the $2.50 to cover shipping costs. Just a reminder that these are due by Friday 17th September (end of week 9).

Character Strengths
Dear Parents,
Currently at OLC we are focusing on modelling and observing different character strengths. This week we are looking for people who show Good Judgement in decision making.

St Vinnies Fundraiser
On Friday the 24th September (the last day of school) we will have a footy/sport colours day. Students are to bring a gold coin donation with all funds going to our pastoral care fridge and St Vinnies. We thank you in advance for your support with this.

Book Week
Our Book Week celebration will be held in the final week of term with the dress-up assembly being held first part of the day. (There is a slight chance the costumes may not be at their finest at our normal assembly time!)
Seesaw App - Keep an eye out, as there will be a few new posts put on Seesaw over the next two weeks. We have been very busy completing important tasks...as a result the marking pile has grown...but I'm getting through it and you will see the fruits of your child's labour very soon💗
