Wadandi boodja, Wadan Boonar Moort Kaaditjin Wongi, Nitcha Wadandi Noongar Boodja.

This blog has been expertly created by Ruby Drmota, Luca York, Mia Pyke and Lolah Day. We hope you are all having a wonderful weekend with the people you love. 🤩🤩

How good was that long weekend last week, it now seems so far away!

We have now finally entered the Wadandi season of Makuru!!

It is now the coldest and wettest time of the year. Makuru is also known as the fertility season. The season is represented by the colour dark blue which symbolises rain, storms, and cold weather. 💦💧☔

⭐⭐Merit Award⭐⭐
Well done to Tara Tutt and Paige Maslin for receiving our 6R Merit Award for week 8.  Both girls are such incredible role models within our class that bring unique qualities and talents to our class's skill set. There is one thing for sure...they are true ambassadors of our CARE values in and out of school. We are so very lucky to have you both in our class!

Learning From Week 7&8 of Term 2:
Excursion: BAY GALLERY
Last week on Monday 31st of May we had an exciting excursion to Bay Gallery to view some amazing local indigenous artworks as part of our focus on National Reconciliation Week. We all saw some amazing pieces of art on our tour of the gallery, shown to us by 2 amazing tour guides named Shamus and Chris. We split into two groups, and whilst we were waiting for our tour we took a short walk to Djiljit Mia the new community play ground in Dunsborough and ate lunch. We all had lots of fun walking down Cape Naturalise road on the new path. It was a long walk but the cars kept us awake with lots of beeping of the horns, not to mention Mr Lee's speed walk home (took less than 20 minutes).

Upon return to school, the next day we had to select an art piece that spoke to us and respond to it, describing it's most appealing features and the emotions it stirred within us. Come and see this on display in the classroom.

Writing:
We have been practicing, as a class, writing detailed Information Reports on the critically endangered numbat. We have written many PEEL body paragraphs, as well as writing a well-structured introduction that hooks the reader and summarises the content of the report using wording that isn't repeated throughout the text. This is no mean feat...paraphrasing is a tricky skill!

We are now moving on to our own Information Reports about South West animals e.g. Tilly and Shaye are doing dolphins and Lucy is doing a kookaburra. In our report we need to write about our animal's physical appearance, diet, habitat and lifestyle and its link to the Wadandi Culture. We began our research last week and will endeavour to write our drafts this week. You wait until you see how we will display these...it's pretty special!

Mathematics:
During Math's with Mrs Ricciardone, we have been learning how to multiply and divide decimals. To multiply decimals, first multiply as if there is no decimal. Next, count the number of digits after the decimal in each factor. Finally, put the same number of digits behind the decimal in the number (see the example below).

Can you spot what is missing at the end of this calculation above?

Always remember to count the decimal places at the end and add the decimal point back in at the end of the sum, otherwise the sum is incorrect. The correct answer is 22.120.

We now see how important times tables really are! Quick fast - what is 8 x 9?

Technologies:
In Technologies we have been learning about sustainability and renewable energy. We learned about a true story of a student in Bangladesh - Iqbal who created a solar oven to help his family. We learnt about the power of a solar oven and how it can be used effectively in third world countries. We recently designed our own solar ovens, with the intention for them to cook foods such as popcorn, toast and even smores 😮

On Thursday we did it, we started to construct our solar ovens! Thank you to all the parents for helping us gather all the materials that we needed. Now to see if they actually work and if we can make some yummy s'mores! Here are some of our class’ solar ovens!

Science:
Mrs Murphy had us all bring in a tin can BUT no experiment was done as yet… she has taken them home to do something secret with them. All we know is that it has to do with volcanos.👍

Buddies:
On Friday, we spent the time after lunch and before assembly playing games with our year 2 buddies. It was a nice way to show leadership, have fun and teach some of the younger kids how to play some different games.

THIS IS IMPORTANT: The Year Four's are doing Eucharist and the Year Three's are doing Reconciliation over the next two weeks. If you are in the choir, Mrs Sherbourne has asked if you can attend these masses to support the students and sing like angels. Email or see Mrs Sherbourne for more info.

Week 7&8 Important Information:
💥IMPORTANT! Uniform💥
Over the past couple of weeks, we have noticed that many uniform issues are starting to arise within the class. These include:
  • Wearing of incorrect sport socks - please ensure that your child is wearing the correct white sport socks (Please no santa cruz, Dunsborough basketball or other surf/skate brand socks) on their sports days
  • Wearing nail polish to school - this goes against the school uniform policy
  • Wearing of sneakers on the formal school uniform day - please ensure your child is wearing their black formal school shoe on a Monday, Wednesday and Thursday
We'd appreciate your assistance with the correction of these issues.

Character Strengths:
Dear Parents, currently at OLC we are focusing on modeling and observing different character strengths. The strengths that we will focus on are taken directly from the VIA Institute for Character. If you wanted to learn more about this please follow the link to the 24 character strengths: https://www.viacharacter.org/character-strengths

This upcoming week we are looking for people who show Fairness. Can you encourage your child to reflect on the following?

Each student in 6R will do the character survey on Monday this week, learning about their 24 character strengths, focusing mainly on their top 5. Each student will download information on their individual strengths and you can view them on their laptop. It would be interesting to see if you agree with what they get. We will be focusing on these strengths over the upcoming weeks.
