Hello from Imogen & Tilly - Week 5 Term 2

Kaya,

This blog has been expertly created by Imogen King and Tilly Hall, and I am sure you will agree that they have done a wonderful job.

Hope you all had a nice refreshing weekend with your friends and family! As the weather begins to get colder, we are reaching the end of Djeran and moving towards the wintery season of Makuru.

Good news...you’ll be starting to see less of the different types of snails ( probably eating your veggies in your garden!πŸ˜‚ ) and Shelducks paddling in lakes and pools of water... Interesting Fact!! If a Shelduck has a white ring around its eye, it’s a female (like the one below).

CLASS FUN FACT: Did you know Sophie had a guinea pig with one ear because her chook pecked it off!!!

⭐⭐Star Citizen Award⭐⭐
Well done to Lexi Lepidi for receiving our 6R Star Citizen for Appreciation for Term 2. What an asset to the classroom she's become! We are always delighted by the maturity shesuses to show appreciation to those around her. You are consistently the first to show active listening, display beautiful manners and assist your class mates in their time of need. She is a compassionate and loving friend who shows a genuine interest in caring for those around you and the environment. We often catch her guiding her peers and supporting them in tasks they may find difficult because she is truly concerned for their wellbeing. Congratulations on being the 6R Star Citizen!

This is exactly what people do…

πŸ“—Classroom LearningπŸ“—
Maths
In Math's we are learning to convert fractions into decimals. We are continuing to do our Math's rotations and by the end of this month, we will all be genius's! We have been working hard. Here is an example explaining how to work it out...

Writing
In Writing we have finished our narratives and they look so cool! We are moving on to Information Reports. Through the week we researched facts about Numbats for our Cold task. We were given the opportunity to show Mrs R what we knew about the structure of an Information Report through the Cold Task, so know she knows what to target when teaching this genre.

Fun fact about numbats: They eat up to 20,000 termites a day and they do not chew their food.

Reading
In Reading we are continuing with our normal reading groups- Comprehension, Reader's Theatre, guided reading and free choice writing.

Science
With Mrs Murphy we learnt about tectonic plates. To learn the different way an earthquake can occur we used Oreos!!! Later we had a challenge on who could it the slowest, guess who won- Immy did!!!

Digi Tech
In Digi Tech we are learning about sustainability. Using solar, wind, uranium, hydropower and geothermal power. We soon are making solar ovens!

Religion:
In religion we are learning about the 7 sacraments and what it means to the church we are learning about the importance of these sacraments. We also completed an art project sheet on it, that is now hanging in our classroom. We will be doing a quiz on these sacraments on these next week.

Week 6 Important Information
Year 4/5 Toilets
Vanessa Hodge has completed the motivational quotes in the Year 4/5 toilets. Please take time to have a look – magic stuff!

Character Strengths:
Dear Parents, currently at OLC we are focusing on modeling and observing different character strengths. The strengths that we will focus on are taken directly from the VIA Institute for Character. If you wanted to learn more about this please follow the link to the 24 character strengths: https://www.viacharacter.org/character-strengths
This upcoming week we are looking for people who show Bravery. Can you encourage your child to reflect on the following?

OLC Celebrates National Sorry Day – Bring a T Shirt!
Wednesday the 26th May marks National Sorry Day and Thursday the 27th marks the beginning of National Reconciliation Week. These are important dates for us to acknowledge as we work toward harmony and intercultural understanding as a nation.

The theme for Reconciliation week this year is: More than a word … Reconciliation takes action. Considering this theme, we are planning on conducting a whole school event involving all OLC students, and parents are asked dress their child with either a black, red or yellow T shirt (any shade or hue is fine) and black sports shorts on the day of Wednesday 26th May. This might not mean buying a T-Shirt – school sports shirts for Meelup and Leeuwin could be worn, or any T’s you already have at home which are predominantly one of these colours will be fine. Stay tuned to our Social Media platforms during Reconciliation Week to see the fruits of out labours!

Please see the video we watched today in class, of a lady called Florence Onus who was from the Stolen Generation as she spoke about her experience to her grand daughter. The student's have really engaged respectfully into this topic and we will continue learning about this topic during the week.

On Friday there is a 'Sorry Day' Prayer Assembly at 2pm in the hall, you are most welcome to join us.

Dance For Sick Kids Fundraiser:
The beautiful and talented Mrs Haines organised a wonderful fundraiser on Friday the 21st May. All funds raised will help seriously ill or injured children and their families by providing a home-away-from-home at Ronald McDonald House, whilst they receive critical care and treatment. All students and staff joined in an awesome dance routine on Friday, it was wonderful to see all the talent, smiles, energy and enthusiasm from both staff and students.
