Welcome to Week 7!

Clientmoji

 Good evening all,

If only we could start every week with a long weekend! The boys and I had such a lovely reset day, ready to battle the final part of the term, we hope you all had a chance to do the same at some point over the weekend.

SPORTS CARNIVAL

Congratulations to Leeuwin on winning the Sports Carnival last week, a fine speech by our captains Zali and Axton. It was a close one, but in the end my beloved MEELUP wasn't strong enough to take the win. The students again showed such great enthusiasm and leadership in their roles on the day and gave it their all in their last carnival at primary school.

Thank you to all the parents who were able to make it down... It was incredible to see so many year 6 parents working hard on the BBQ's, at the coffee machine, in the cake stall and zipping down the track in the flag relay. We are so lucky to have such generous people who show such great commitment to the school, from all accounts a lot of money was raised!

If you are missing a platter from the cake stall, you will hopefully find it in the front of our class. The beautiful Elli has washed and stacked them there ready for you.

WEEK 7 LEARNING

This week we are getting right into our persuasive writing topic of 'Western Australia is the best state'. Now that we studied the structure, language features and devices of a persuasive text, we are ready to co-construct a class example. Tomorrow we will establish our arguments and research evidence to support these arguments. No rest for us, we will also be writing our introduction to the text tomorrow! By Friday our class modeled text will be complete and the students will get the chance to write one on their own.

In Science this week, we will continue studying irreversible and reversible changes in chemical science. Tomorrow's lesson will include cooking; looking at the processes and reactions that take place. We will complete a set of experiments that investigates 'Why popcorn pops' and the factors that affect the rate at which it occurs. I will try to not burn down the school, might be best to do it in the 'fungeon' I think!Bitmoji Image

We are rounding off our Algebra unit in Math's this week, the students will have an assessment on Wednesday which covers algebraic equations, identifying the value of pro numerals and symbols, using the balance strategy to solve a sum, simplifying equations and using BIMDAS (order of operations). We will then start our new measurement topic, Time.

In Religion, we are continuing our unit on Reconciliation to support the Year 3's sacrament coming up. This week we play particular focus to the parable about 'The Lost Sheep' and the connections we can make to our lives when we are feeling lost or off track.

To round off the week, the students will be preparing a little something special to celebrate someone in their lives who does so very much for them. Ready just in time for the weekend.

WEEK 7 REMINDERS

OPERATION CHRISTMAS CHILD

It's that time of year that we participate in the 'Operation Christmas Child' shoe box initiative that has been a wonderful OLC tradition for many years and reflects our school value of Compassion so well. These shoe boxes are sent to underprivileged children throughout the world as a gift for Christmas.

The children will be placed into in groups of four and between them, they will fill a shoebox with a variety of items. The items do not need to be expensive. Each child in the group will be asked to cover the cost of sending the shoebox to its final destination. We ask them to bring in $2.50 each. The children will be given time in the classroom to pack the shoebox and explore some of the places that their shoe boxes may be travelling to.

Please see the flyer below for further information:

Tomorrow your child will be coming home with a note that clearly states which item category they need to bring:
- Something to love
- Something to play with
- Something to draw with or write on
- Something for personal hygiene
- Something to wear

Items are to be no longer than 20cm long and not too bulky as they will not fit in the shoe box.

If you have any queries or concerns can you please contact me A.S.A.P, as the children will need to have their items in by the End of week 9 (Friday 16th September). I will have a box at the front of the classroom for all donations to be put into.

I thank you for your support with this.

WHEELIE, WALKIE, WASTE-FREE WEDNESDAY

I apologise for the wrong information posted last week, especially to those that went to extra efforts to make sure that their child was walking/riding and waste free. I too parked at the church, walked to school with two bags and whinging children to find out that it was the wrong week! I saw the positive out of it and loved the extra energy I had throughout the day from my walk!

Our Wheelie, Walkie, Waste -Free Wednesdays will commence again this Wednesday and continue for 3 weeks:

Week 7 (2nd September)
Week 8 (9th September)
Week 9 (16th September)
