Week 3 Term 3

Hi guys,
Bitmoji Image

Welcome back to week 3 and what a wet and chilly start we are having! I foolishly planted some veggies in the garden over the weekend, being the novice gardener I am, and didn't check the upcoming weather forecast and didn't see the deluge of rain we are about to receive this week. Here's hoping the sun comes out a little to give them a tiny bit of hope.

NEWS JUST IN...
I just want to inform you, that as of Week 5 Alison will be replacing Mrs Murphy in Year 3 while she is on leave for the rest of term 3. I will be working full-time in Year 6, up until the end of Term 3.

WEEK 2 REMINDERS

keep me postedHere are some reminders for the week ahead:

LETTERS FOR RETREAT DAY
Just a reminder that your letter for your child is due at the end of this week. These will be given out on the Retreat Day where your child will take time to reflect on and respond to these. Further details about what to include in the letter are in Week 1's blog post.

CONFIRMATION RETREAT DAY
All students will be participating in our Confirmation Retreat day on Friday 14th August. Mrs Meyer has been working incredibly hard to ensure this day is special for all of the children. There are a range of activities that the children will take part in on the day, including receiving your letter. They will also participate in a Reconciliation liturgy and practice for Confirmation the next day.

The day will take place in the hall and the students will be able to wear free dress. The school will be providing lunch for the children and we ask that each student brings a share plate for recess.
- Boys are to bring a plate of savoury food
- Girls are to bring a plate of sweet food

Please contact me if you have any further questions.

EUCHARISTIC ADORATION
Eucharistic Adoration is being held at the church this Friday 7th August, where people come in and pray in silence in front of the Eucharist, usually for a period of an hour. The year 6’s will visit in two separate small groups, one from 11.00-11.30, the other from 11.30 until 12.00. They will have a workbook to take for them to contemplate and work on to help them to maintain the required reverence during their half hour session. Mrs Meyer will take the first group to the church and then Mrs Ricciardone will bring and stay with the second group. This is a new experience/opportunity for us all to take time to stop and reflect on our lives in the lead up to our celebration of Confirmation.

FR TONY VISIT
Father Tony will be visiting the Confirmation candidates on Thursday 13th August to check that they are suitably prepared for Confirmation.

SACRAMENT OF CONFIRMATION
The Sacrament of Confirmation will take place on Saturday 15th August in the church at 6pm (please arrive at 5.45pm). It would be incredibly special if all prayer buddies could attend and support their peers as they have two important roles to play in the ceremony.

All families will have a pew allocated to them, however due to COVID restrictions, prayer buddies are only allowed a maximum of 3 people attending (student included) and Confirmation candidates a maximum of 7 people attending (including the candidate).

We ask that the students wear their 'Sunday best'  and the Confirmation candidates are in predominately white. Candidates only, please remember to place (pin) your sash on the right shoulder of your child.

Please see myself or Mrs Meyer if you have any further questions about the event.

WEEK 3 LEARNING

Here are some of the topics for this term:

English
We have began immersing ourselves in the world of Shaun Tan and his surreal picture books. Recently we completed an author study on the Australian author Shaun Tan and are in the process of displaying these around the room. We will continue to learn about the elements that form an engaging picture book such as themes, line, colour, symbolism, vocabulary, juxtaposition, etc From here we will explore many of his titles and compare and contrast between them.

Shaun Tan explains his drawing process -- The 'Extras' for Rules ...
We will then integrate this into our writing by constructing persuasive texts. The students will have to persuade Shaun Tan as to which book of his is the best according to their analysis of the elements within the book and then forming strong arguments ( I am hoping to send the best couple to Shaun Tan). We will study the structure and features of a persuasive text before writing this final piece.

Mathematics
We have began learning Pre-algebra which focuses on number patterns and how to form and apply recursive and function rules. From here we will continue to explore rules and the development of algebraic equations. This will involve problem solving and finding the values of a symbol in a sum. Next Tuesday the 11th August, the students will have a short pre-algebra assessment, focusing on the concepts covered so far.

Religion
Currently we are working through the Confirmation unit and will follow on with the Reconciliation unit to support the Year 3's in their upcoming sacrament at the end of the term.

baking
Science
This term we are studying Chemical Sciences, which focuses on reversible and irreversible changes among substances. I am very excited to announce a bit of baking will take place during this unit, as well as some experiments to test the processes that cause particular reversible and irreversible changes.

Art
Currently we are designing and constructing some mosaic artwork for Confirmation to display in the church. We also have the opportunity again this year to participate in the 'Peace Poster' competition. The students will be given some time in class to design and construct these posters, however it may become a homework project depending on how long they take to complete.

WEEK 3 HOMEWORK

Most students were incredible organised last week, completing all homework and having their documents signed.

Homework for this week includes:
  • Spelling - 2 Spelling activities - Dictionary Meanings (8 words) and Alphabetical Order
  • Times tables practice - 8 & 9's
  • Reading - out loud 20 minutes each night (titles to be written into their diaries)
  • Choice tasks - students are to complete 3 different activities from the bottom section of their grid. If you have any suggestions or ideas on different areas you need help in, please let me know.
