Week 6 Term 2

Good morning all,

What a difference an extra day makes on a weekend! The things you can get done and the fun you can have without feeling shattered come Monday. I hope you too had a wonderful long weekend.

The Year 6's are famous!
You may remember back at the start of Term 1, the students were recorded as backup singers in a new single called 'Autumn Day' by a local artist, Steve Trigwell.  Well come the 6th of June, this song can be heard on Spotify and other digital platforms (see the poster below for more details). Last week, we had a sneak preview and the children sounded beautiful, what a talented little bunch we have!

ON-A-ROLL
Last week was a great week, the students were so much more focused and organised. As a result, some brilliant work was completed! Currently we have some new students on our 'On-a-roll' Board: Jye, Savannah, Sophie, Gabe, Ruby, Axton and Zahra. Congratulations to these students for producing some of their best work last week!

WEEK 6 - LEARNING UPDATE

As promised, this week I have included a few samples of what we have been doing recently.

PENTECOST CANDLES
As part of our Religion Unit, we studied the significance of the Pentecost Story and how it was the first time that Jesus' followers received the Gift of the Holy Spirit, just as we do in Confirmation. The children were to draw the sequence of the Pentecost Story on a candle template. The candle is to signify the 'tongues of fire' in the story, that settled over the heads of the congregation allowing them to speak many languages. Intrigued? See the examples below...

CANONISATION: BECOMING A SAINT
Next in our Religion unit we learnt what a saint is and the process in which a candidate goes through to become a saint. The students were to research the 'Canonisation Process' forming a flow chart on Word or Power Point that clearly shows the 5 steps within the process. They had a set criteria of the features that needed to be included, look at these excellent examples...

WORD STUDY: Etymology
We started a new concept in Spelling on Friday and this was looking at the Etymology of words. The students found it very interesting to see how the spelling and meaning of words have developed and changed over time. Each Friday we are going to study a new Greek/Latin root, last week we explored the meaning of 'bio'. The students selected three of the list words and then broke these words up into their roots, prefixes and suffixes, finding out what each part meant. They then used this info to form a meaning for the whole word.
For example, in biology 'bio' means life, '-logy' means the study of, therefore biology means the study of living organisms.

It is shown in the examples below...

ClientmojiMEASUREMENT ASSESSMENT
A couple of weeks ago we completed our Measurement Assessment. These have been marked and handed back to the students to see their results. We went through the answers as a class for the students to see where they went wrong. A photo of this assessment has been taken and uploaded to OneNote in their 'Assessment Results' folder. THIS IS SO YOU CAN SEE THEIR RESULTS, if you get a chance have a look!

THERE'S MORE...
This is not it!!! We are currently halfway through writing our Saint biographies and they are GOOOOOOOOD! The students are becoming quite clever at writing sentences that hook and entertain the reader without using the same sentence starters and connectives all the time. We will be finishing our drafts this week and then displaying our good copies as a photo frame! You wait until you see them, super cool!

WEEK 6 - HOMEWORK
It was brilliant to see that most students finished their homework last week! Our organisational skills and routines are coming back into order, which is great!

Just want to remind you that the students diaries MUST be signed at the end of the week.

Home Learning Grid includes:

1. Reading 20 minutes each night - write title and amount read into the diary each night

2. Spelling Activities - complete TWO WRITTEN activities into their homework book (words can
    be found on OneNote).

3. Project Work - STEM - Props, script and costumes to be brought in Friday 5th June for the filming
    of their iMovie advertisement.

4. EXTRA (for those who do not finish in class): The students who don't finish the set amount of
biography writing in class, will need to finish it at home that night and bring it back the NEXT
    DAY.

Have a great short week everyone, it's going to be a good one!
