Week 4 Term 1

Good morning everyone,

I hope you all had an opportunity to have fun at some point, among the sensible adult jobs that often get in our way. We had nonna and nonno pop in for a night, before returning to Perth. It's always nice to spend time with the family we don't to see often.

Many great things happened last week, but a special congratulations goes to Annabelle on receiving our class merit award. The maturity and determination this young lady is showing is inspiring.

I also wanted to make special mention of some incredibly compassionate acts happening in our class...a student came in today with a substantial donation that they had collected throughout the weekend busking. They have chosen to donate it to our bush fire fundraiser, assisting St Brendan's, a primary school in the eastern states that has been considerably affected by the bush fires. This is not the first act selfless act I have heard of where the students are giving up their time to assist others in need, another was a lemonade stand who also raised a great sum of money. It is amazing to hear the students at this age talk about these charities, reflect upon what they can do to help and make it happen. What super stars!

REMINDERS - WEEK 4

Ash Wednesday Prayer Service
We will be coming together as a whole school on Wednesday, 26th February at 10am in the hall to mark the beginning of Lent through our Ash Wednesday prayer service. This will draw the students to focus on their prayers and actions during Lent.

During Lent we ask ourselves to pray for others, fast and participate in almsgiving - giving to those in need. These are great conversation points to have with your child if they are a little confused about what they should be doing.

Swimming Carnival
We will be hitting the pool on Thursday 27th February for the annual OLC Swimming Carnival. All parents are warmly invited to attend if you can...come dressed in your child's colours and get ready to yell for your team!

If you can please make sure that your child comes in their faction uniform with thongs to wear to the pool. They will also need bathers, rashie, towel, their school hat and goggles. Suncream is to already be applied before coming to school, we will take extra too!

If you would like to take your child home with you from the pool you will need to come and let me know at the conclusion of the carnival. If someone else will be taking your child, please write a note to give to me.

Rosary Beads
Today we had Mrs Tutt and Mrs De Gares come and teach us about the history and process of praying the rosary. These gorgeous volunteers will return every Monday afternoon for the next 5 weeks to complete a short session allowing us to become more familiar with the important prayers that cement our faith.

It has come to my attention that last year each child was given a set of rosary beads in a small plastic bag. We ask that if possible, can these be brought it during these sessions. This way the students will become familiar with using their own rosary beads.

OUR LEARNING - WEEK 3

Friday was a pretty good day for us last week.

Thanks to Mrs Horrocks, we were incredibly lucky to have the opportunity to record a backing for a professional muso's new song. The students only had to learn a few words and a couple of harmonies. In no time at all they were singing as a harmonious little choir. It was great inspiration for those budding musicians in our class, who one day may aspire to write and record a song of their own.

Then straight after this, we were visited by Ben Liston from Dunsborough Physiotherapy who taught us in a fun and interactive way about our posture and the benefits of having a good posture. The students got to test their lung capacities, strength and endurance through a range of fun activities.

It was interesting to learn that Toby had the greatest lung capacity, Jye was a muscle man when standing up straight and Ruby can nearly out jump Mr Jones! Best of all Mr Torrese has a bit of work to do to develop his core, dropping way before majority of the year sixes (yes including myself!) when doing a 2 minute plank!

Yesterday we looked at developing a good setting within a narrative through the use of our senses and a variety of figurative language techniques. I'm excited about this task, as the students will take on the persona of Lucy from Narnia and describe what she sees when she enters the cupboard for the first time! Any opportunity to watch snippets of Narnia is well worth it! The students will receive the image below and view the short clip of her entering the wardrobe. I have a feeling I'm going to be blown away with some of the language and literary devices used to ensure I feel like I'm there with Lucy in Narnia!

We will continue to work on these pieces throughout the week and display them ASAP for your viewing.

HOMEWORK - WEEK 4

Our homework grid is to be completed over the week from Monday to Thursday and is due in on Friday morning to be checked. If you can please make sure that your child has chased you around the house so you can sign their grid and reading in their diary, I would be most appreciative!

If you can also please mark your child's spelling homework after they have done it, this means that they don't repeat a mistake across the whole week.

Please check your child's diary, as they have entered two assessments that will take place this week.

Have a great week,

Mrs Ricciardone & Mrs Martin
