Week 2 Term 1

Good evening parents,

Welcome back to another week! What a great week it was...so many great things achieved already. A large part of our week last week was setting routines and clear expectations, as well as outlining our new responsibilities as leaders. I was most impressed with how your children have already taken on these roles with great maturity and enthusiasm.

Last week was one of the most enjoyable first week's back at school. I can't remember the last time I had 90% of the class thank me for their week and wish me well for the weekend as they walked out the door on Friday. You are raising such well-mannered and respectful little humans. I was happy to see that I didn't scare them off, as they all had beaming smiles on their faces this morning upon their return!

I want to take this opportunity to congratulate our new Sports Captains for 2020, I know they will honor and wear their badge with great pride.

Important Reminders - Week 2

Leaver's Shirt
Thank you for being so prompt in returning your money for these. I hope you agree with me when I say they look amazing and make the students truly stand out as the LEADERS of the school. As previously stated there has been a day change. The students will now wear their Leaver's shirt on a Tuesday for their Phys Ed lesson with Mrs Sinclair and wear their faction t-shirt on Friday's with the rest of the school. There is potential for the students to wear their shirts twice a week at the end of the year in Term 4. This will be advised later in the year.

Parent Information Night
Please note this will take place tomorrow night. There will be two sessions (repeated) with a quick chat from Eugene in between. The first session will run from 5-5.30pm and the second will run from 6-6.30pm. Eugene will present to the whole school in the hall at 5.30pm. We would love to see you there...if you are unable to make it, we will be emailing the presentation to you afterwards for you to refer back to throughout the year.

Files
Can you please check with your child if they still need another file. Some students only brought in the one and still need another.

Swimming Trials
These will be held on Tuesday 18th February. More information to follow!

Learning - Week 2

So our learning is well and truly under way!

Our first job was to set a personal goal that will enhance their ability to achieve greater success this year. We first discussed the many inspirational leaders in their lives that they aspired to be like. From here we identified the qualities and traits that they admired in these people. They then needed to select a quality/trait of their own that they felt was an area of focus for this year. They recognised reasons as to why they chose this quality and then came up with actions that they will take to enhance this trait in themselves.

Next we set some class pledges. So instead of forming rules we decided to form a contract as a class, identifying the key pledges that were based around our school values and are conducive to a safe and successful environment. After the pledges were set, the students promised (through their signature) that they would do their role in making each other feel safe. Take a look below...

As a way of me getting to know a little more about the students, I set the task of creating a 'All About Me Graffiti Wall' where they had to list new facts about themselves I didn't know. Between this activity and their homework letters, I feel I have been able to develop an even stronger connection with your child. Please come in and check them out before the display is changed with more great work!

In English this term we are focusing on the genre of Narrative. The students will learn how to develop a more complex story line and layering of problems to enhance their ability to engage and entertain the audience. I look forward to challenging their vocabulary knowledge and literary skills!

We began our reading group rotations today and it was a huge success! There is a great emphasis this term on their fluency, intonation and expression in all of the tasks set. I must say their favourite today was Reader's Theatre, they are definitely a theatrical bunch.

In Numeracy we will are placing a great focus on Number and Place Value this term. This includes expanding, manipulating and ordering numbers beyond six digits. We will then go onto study different types of numbers such as prime, composite, roman numerals, triangular numbers, etc. Then to finish the unit we will focus on mental and written strategies for the four operations. This is not to mention the concepts they are covering with Ali on a Wednesday, busy little munchkins.

Our Religion units this term will focus on Eucharist and Lent. This is to run in line with the Year 4's Eucharist celebration at the start of next term and Easter coming at the end of this term.

In Science we are having fun studying biological sciences, identifying the reactions and processes that occur within our natural environment. Currently we are growing mould, using an array of independent variables to test what conditions create the 'optimum mould growing' environment. So far it's my wholemeal piece of bread that is winning the race, ask your child what their independent variable is and how it is going!

There is so much more to share but I have bored you enough for now. To be continued...

Homework - Week 2

This year the school has changed our approach to homework. We acknowledge and highly value an approach to homework that is family friendly and has a wide range of activities that reflect student's interests.

Our Home Learning Grid is to be completed over the week from Monday to Thursday and is due in on Friday morning to be checked. If you can please make sure that your child has chased you around the house so you can sign their grid and diary, I would be most appreciative!

Your child has been given a hard copy which they have glued into their homework book. On top of this the students are to be writing their reading into their diary each night and getting it signed with the Home Learning Grid. If you have any questions, please let me know.

Thank you again for a fantastic start to the term!
